Oporto lies at the mouth of the Douro River and prospered with the boom in port wine sales from the 18th to early 20th century. Indeed no visit to Portugal's second city is complete without a walk across the Dom Luis I bridge to visit the port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Back in Oporto, climb up the Torre (tower) dos Clérigos for the finest views over the city. Merchants' houses line the Rua das Flores while the narrow streets of the medieval old town plunge down to the Cais (quay) da Ribeira. Ribeira is both the city's most atmospheric district and a World Heritage Site. A far more recent attraction is the Fundação de Serralves, the museum of modern art, which is situated outside the city centre.
One of the great advantages of the Infante Sagres is that it offers the Terraço, which is the terrace which invites you to take time out to sunbath in the centre of Oporto.
The Pestana Porto is one of the most charming hotels in Oporto, ideally located in the Parca da Ribeira, heart of the historic city, offering splendid views of river Douro.
