Best of Madeira

Closer to Africa than Europe, this semi-tropical island was discovered in the early 15th century. Today's discerning travellers are lured by one of the best year-round climates in the world with temperatures averaging from 15 to 25°C.

The main island may only be 57 km long and 23 km wide, but has so much to offer: natural beauty, festivals, game fishing, golf, hiking, historic sites and scuba diving. This island will appeal to people of all ages, particuarly those interested in golf, wine, painting and walking.

The island is better known, however, for its fortified wines and abundance of flowers. Few people realise that British wine merchants introduced much of the flora in the 18th century.

The island's highlights include the Pico (peak) do Arieiro, the thatched houses in Santana, a levada walk in the area around Rabaçal and the long scenic drive from Ribeira Brava to Porto do Moniz via Sao Vicente. Porto Santo, the only other inhabited island, is dominated by a remarkable eight-kilometre long beach of white sand. Be sure to visit it.
