Lisbon stands on seven hills along the Tejo (Tagus) River. Baixa, the lower town, is built on an 18th-century grid. Alfama, to the east, is the city's oldest district. The Moorish, Castelo (castle) de São Jorge overlooks Alfama's steep and winding streets. To the west is Chiado, an elegant shopping district. Above it lies Bairro Alto, the upper town. Portugal's distinctive fado (fate) music is a feature of its lively nightlife. A street lift, the Elevador de Santa Justa, stops near to the ruined Convento do Carmo, the most spectacular reminder of the Great Earthquake of 1755.
The capital's cultural riches include two major art museums, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and the Fundção Calouste Gulbenkian, as well as the Quinta (palace) do Marquês de Fronteira. The Mosteiro (monastery) dos Jerónimos and the nearby Torre (tower) de Belém are among the finest examples of Portugal's Manueline architecture.
Immense bridges connect Lisbon to the famous Cristo Rei (Christ the King) Statue. Alternatively, head in the opposite direction to the hill town of Sintra or the resorts of Estoril and Cascais.
Described as a resort within the city, built in 1870 as the private residence of the Count of Valenças, the Lapa Palace is set on a hill overlooking Lisbon's Tagus River, amid tranquil gardens dotted with ornamental fountains and streams.
The Mundial is located in the Baixa Pombalina district, right in the heart of Lisbon, with the Castelo do São Jorge as backdrop. It is just a short walk from Praça do Rossio square, an area with easy and quick access to the main sights of the city.
